I believe the new design has been done with the intention to *attract people*, instead of risking to scare them (or their eyes) away with loads of text, especially when it concerns the home page.

These days, people are (unfortunately) getting more and more used to reading a very little (cf. tweets!) unless they are already interested (in which case they keep reading "long texts", e.g., news or books).
It's a general tendency to place the contents for the eyes to easily find their way (even when actually it's all pretend). 

I will admit that I find it more practical when there's more contents on a web page, but that happens only when I know what I'm looking for: I do use the web browser's search function a *lot*. That being said, I'm convinced that a not overloaded page would be far better for the OCaml community's reflection.
